Portrait of Phillip Masumba

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved father, Phillip Masumba. Phillip was born into a family of eight – four boys and four girls – on June 6, 1948, in Hillside, Harare, to the late Phineas Masumba and Esnath Nyambayo.

Family and Legacy

A devoted husband to Chendisaita Stella Masumba (nee Chadoka), whom he married in April 1975, Phillip was a loving father to his five sons – Michael, Tendai, Vimbai, Munyaradzi, and Batsirai – and a doting grandfather to his 10 grandchildren.

He was a cherished brother to Violet Teclar (married Kachara), Anna (married Mawoyo), Esther (married Chinguno), Misheck, Felix, Fiona (married Mwashita), and David. His legacy is not just in the family he raised, but in the lessons we carry, the love we share, and the way we will continue to honor him every single day.

Education and Career

Phillip’s pursuit of knowledge began at Mutambara Primary, before he transferred to Nyakatsapa Primary School and continued his high school education at Old Mutare Mission. In 1967, he enrolled at Nyadire Teachers’ College in Mutoko, completing his teacher training in 1968. His passion for education took him across continents, where he worked and inspired students in Lesotho, Botswana, Nigeria, and Britain. He retired in 1996, leaving a legacy of mentorship that continues to touch countless lives.
